I play Stardew Valley a little, but my girls love the game and I occasionally help them play. Maybe I should give it an honest go. Just I'm trying to not play video games too much anymore cause I was really obsessed with them, in particular gotcha games. Maybe I should try one of the several cozy ttrpgs.

Careful. I actively deleted Steam off my PC because I was doing things like playing Stardew Valley instead of working on my writing. I have similar obsessive tendencies and it was consuming my ability to actually get work done.

I also got stuck in Stardew valley. Hated it at first, then couldn't stop playing it. It is a heartwarming game. Too often I also find myself living a life of "what if." Stuck in a nostalgic past or dreading a fearsome future. It's a trap. Learning to live in the perpetual "now" is hard. Spiritual practices help, especially silent prayer and practicing "stillness." The Desert Fathers can help here. It's still a struggle. Congratulations on writing for the One Ring. I have older softcovers of the first edition by Cubicle 7. Really need to pick up the new books. Alas, I believe it's yet another game that will never get played, as the groups I've found myself in don't seem the type to play it

My go-to game post-40 is Wizard101! I'm a level 101 fire wizard and still enjoy playing it with my now adult children 🙂 Also super cool on The Hobbit book! That is like an impossible dream come true!

I first fired up Stardew Valley the week after my paternal grandfather died.

He was a popular man, but not a good one, not to his family.

So when the first thing that happens in the game is that your loving grandfather gifts you the farm because he's concerned for your physical and mental wellbeing... well, I had to immediately turn it off again and process some new feelings.

It's a beautiful game.

Also, when/where can I get The Road Home? It sounds lovely!

It’s several months to a year from release. I’m currently pushing to get RetroQuest out there. It uses the Trinity System - which is also used for The Devil’s Due and the forthcoming Hyperstar.

Thanks for writing! I'm glad you survived. I designed a similar game I've been running the last six years and distilled the (non-Tolkien) shirelings and their setting, Yestershire, this way:

Folk love things that grow. They garden and pray for rain. They collect rocks and superstitions. They dream of fairytales. They're petty. Most folk respect wisdom but seek luck, which to them is a kind of Folk Magic. The lucky ones live to hold their grandchildren and see how things that grow are things that last.

In a hollow where heralds ride to hear history echo, Yestershire rhymes riddles downriver of everything but steel.

An ancient hedgerow veils the village against the tangled Deep Green mysteries, which ravenously ramble about an errant meal.

I think all of us are guilty of playing the "What If" game. I know I am. I think learning to accept where we are is part of growing up and maturing. God doesn't demand we meet some threshold before he accepts us, He meets us where we are at when we call out to him.

Anyway, time for me to be an adult and do some laundry and dishes.
