Hm. The Scots who went to the US South & Appalachia were almost all lowlander Presbyterians, not the kilted Jacobite Highlanders you're thinking of. They were Royalists in the American War of Independence/Revolution; many fled to Canada after the war.

What I found interesting was that my own ancestors were from the Highlands, left right around the aftermath of the Jacobite Uprising - but by most records I could find the Macleods supported the British during the affair. If so, then why'd they flee? (They lived in Virginia in the states and their son eventually settled in Kentucky, where the family remained for 200+ years until my grandfather left and ended up in Baltimore after WWII)

I think the Macleods suffered from the Clearances same as everyone else - it was more commercial than ideological.

I was coming here to share my common interest in Scotland, specifically the Scots Covenanters during the English Civil War. Having become Presbyterian (PCA) in the last decade, I've been reading up on it and have an interest in delving into them for historical wargaming as well. No armies painted up yet, but time will tell!
